squeaky tern!

Hi,

I have been riding my Link Uno for almost two months now and it is becoming increasingly squeaky and noisy. I actually feel embarassed riding around town on it, and am afraid it is going to just fall apart while I'm riding!

Anything I can do to minimize the noise? I made an apt at my LBS but that isn't for another three weeks because the weather is getting nice and everyone is going in for a tuneup!

Thanks in advance.

Make sure all the latches are properly adjusted. Riding with loose hinges and other parts pre-disposes them to early failure. Your dealer should have shown you how to check adjustment and make necessary corrections. Best of luck!

Steve

Thanks steve. I think the sound is just coming from the handlepost. Not sure how to check adjustment?

I am bringing my bike into my local dealer in a couple of weeks - they're super busy right now. Maybe I'll try and pop in to see if they can take a quick look and give me some suggestions.

Hi Simone,

I’ve asked somebody from our North American office to contact you and help diagnose. A dab of grease on the interlocking parts on the inside of the handlepost can stop squeaking. You might try that first.

^ Ditto on the grease. My Mu P8 gets a bit squeaky now and then. When this happens I grease the folding hinges on the handlepost and the main fold latch. I also greased the inside of the collar for the seat clamp (not the seat tube, I removed the collar from the bike and greased inside of the clamp and then reinstalled it). Doing this has eliminated all squeaks.

I found that when my P9 made a hint of a squeak I rubbed an anti-seize crayon on the inner mating surfaces of the hinges. The crayon is meant for preventing car spark plugs from seizing in the aluminum engine blocks and you should be able to purchase one at any good auto parts place.

Like DJGonzo I also did the seat post clamp and that helps there too.

The great thing about the OCL hinge is that most of the anti-seize coating is covered while the bike is folded so getting your clothes dirty really isn't even a consideration.

Keeping the hinge correctly adjusted also contributes to a squeak free ride.

I love my TERN!!
