1. Getting Started

This section covers the essential information you need to start using your new Quick Haul–from turning it on, to parking it after your ride.

1.1 The Quick Haul is a Pedelec

Your Quick Haul is a pedal-electric bicycle, also known as a pedelec. A pedelec’s motor system only provides power if you are pedaling.

Your Quick Haul’s motor system makes riding easier by giving you an extra boost of power, but otherwise the Quick Haul handles much like a regular bike.

1.2 Bosch Motor System Basics

Your Quick Haul comes equipped with a Bosch E-Bike System. The Bosch system you have depends on your Quick Haul model:

  • Quick Haul D8: Bosch Active Line Plus
  • Quick Haul P9: Bosch Performance Line

Please note that the specifications for your Quick Haul may be slightly different for your market.

1.2.1 The Bosch Purion Display

Both the Quick Haul D8 and the Quick Haul P9 are equipped with the Bosch Purion display, enabling you to quickly view and adjust the settings for your Quick Haul’s e-assist features. The Purion is designed for use in all weather conditions and has adjustable brightness for nighttime riding. You’ll find it conveniently equipped on the left side of your handlebars.

We’ve put together a more extensive article on the Bosch Purion display settings, just in case you want to know even more.

To turn the Purion display on:

Press the Power button located on the top side of the Purion display. You’ll know the Purion is on when white backlighting appears, along with your speed, trip statistics, and a battery status icon.

To switch between e-assist modes:

Use the “+” and “-” buttons to cycle through the Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo modes until you reach your desired level of e-assist.

Eco provides the lowest level of e-assist, whereas Turbo delivers the highest level.

1.2.2 Walk Assist

Your Quick Haul has a Walk Assist mode that uses the Bosch motor system to help you walk your bike. This feature is particularly nice to have when you need to walk your Quick Haul up a steep hill or ramp, especially when the bike is under load.

To use Walk Assist:

  1. Make sure your Quick Haul is in one of the four e-assist modes. Walk Assist won’t turn on if the motor system is set to OFF.
  2. Give the Walk Assist button a short press. The button is located on the bottom side of your Purion display.
  3. When your display shows WALK+, immediately press and hold the “+” button.
  4. Holding the handlebars, walk forward with your bike while continuing to hold the “+” button.
  5. Let go of the “+” button when you no longer need to use Walk Assist.

Tip:

  • The gear your Quick Haul is in affects the speed of the assistance provided by Walk Assist. To get the most oomph, put your bike in the highest gear before activating Walk Assist.

1.2.3 Battery Range Estimate

Your Quick Haul’s battery range varies based on many factors, including the combined weight of the rider plus accessories and cargo, which e-assist level your Quick Hall is set to, riding style, road conditions, and more.

As you are riding, your Quick Haul’s Purion display provides a continuously updated range estimate based on the ride data it collects.

To view the range estimate, long-press the “-” button to toggle through the trip status menu until the range estimate appears.

For your longer bike tours, check out Bosch’s E-Bike Range Assistant. Use it to plan your longer bike trips, just so you’ll know if you need to pack an extra battery before you go.

1.3 Integrated Lighting System

Integrated front and rear LED lights come equipped with your Quick Haul. They are an essential safety component of the e-bike system.

To turn the lights on, press and hold the “+” button for 3 seconds. An icon of a light appears, indicating they are on.

When you are ready to turn off the lights, again press and hold the “+” button for 3 seconds. Your lights are now off.

Safety Tip:

  • Turn on your lights for daytime riding. This increases your visibility to traffic, other riders, and pedestrians. Your local dealer can even help you set the lights to automatically turn on every time your Quick Haul’s display is turned on. This is convenient because you won’t have to worry about remembering to turn the lights on yourself. And if you’re concerned about battery life, you can rest assured. Your Quick Haul’s battery is large enough to power the lights alone for days on end.

1.4 Battery

Your Quick Haul comes with a battery and charger from Bosch. You can charge the battery at any time–on or off the bike–without shortening its service life.

Important: Always turn off the motor system before you charge the battery.

To charge the battery on the bike:

  1. Open the rubber socket lid on the battery mount.
  2. Plug the charging connector into the socket on the battery mount.
  3. Connect the charger to an electric source.

To remove the battery and charge it off the bike:

  1. Insert the key into the battery lock.
  2. Turn the key clockwise.
  3. Lift the battery out of your Quick Haul’s battery mount.
  4. Plug the charging connector into the socket on the bottom of the battery.
  5. Connect the charger to an electric source.

To re-insert the battery:

  1. Place the battery on the Quick Haul’s battery mount.
  2. Push the battery until you hear a click.

The battery is ready to be used again.

Tip:

  • Always remove the key from your Quick Haul when the battery is attached. This is to prevent the battery from becoming disconnected while riding, and also to make sure no one removes the battery without your permission.

To learn more about your battery, Bosch has an informative e-bike battery guide for you to read.

1.5 Battery Keys

Your Quick Haul includes two battery keys, so you’ll always have a spare. You won’t be able to remove your battery from the Quick Haul without one of the keys. It’s a good idea to put your spare key in a safe location, separate from your main key.

In the off chance that both of your keys get lost or damaged, you can get a new set of keys using the serial number written on the side of both the original keys.

Tip:

  • Send yourself an email with the serial number on your keys. This is so you’ll always have a backup. Also, register your keys with Trelock to make getting replacements easier, just in case.

2. Adjust the Bike Fit

You can adjust the fit of your Quick Haul in seconds by using the two quick releases on the seatpost and on the Speedlifter stem. It’s easy to adjust your bike so you get a perfect fit, and it’s also helpful when you share your bike with others.

To adjust the seatpost:

  1. Unlock the seatpost by pulling the quick release lever open.
  2. Adjust the seatpost to the height that’s most comfortable for you.
  3. Lock the seatpost in its new position by pushing the quick release lever closed.

Safety Tip:

  • Always stay within the minimum insertion indicator marked on the seatpost. Riding your Quick Haul with the seatpost adjusted beyond this indicator is not safe, and you risk injury in doing so.

To adjust the Speedlifter stem:

  1. Unlock the stem by pulling the quick release lever open.
  2. Adjust the stem to the height that’s most comfortable for you.
  3. Lock the stem in its new position by pushing the quick release lever closed.

From time to time, you may need to adjust the tightness of the quick release clamps on your seatpost and Speedlifter stem. You’ll know it’s time to do this if it feels too easy or too difficult to open and close the quick release levers. To make an adjustment, simply open the quick release, and then rotate the clamp screw nut opposite the quick release lever to tighten or loosen the quick release.

Safety Tip:

  • Pay close attention to the tightness level of the quick release levers. If any of the quick releases on your bike are not properly closed or are too loose, you risk injury when riding.

3. Essential Bike Parts

Before you hit the road, there are some essential bike parts and functions you should be comfortable using. In this section, you’ll learn how to change gears and use the brakes on your Quick Haul.

3.1 Gears

Shifting gears lets you tackle hills with ease and ride smoothly and efficiently no matter the terrain. The Quick Haul P9 and D8 both come with a trigger shifter that allows you to control your speed and the resistance you feel when pedaling.

The trigger shifter is located on the right side of the handlebar. It has a numerical indicator to show you which gear your Quick Haul is in. To downshift to a lower gear, push the rear-facing shift lever paddle with your thumb. To upshift to a higher gear, pull the forward-facing shift lever with your finger.

Remember to only shift gears while you’re pedaling. For smoother shifting, pedal lightly while changing gears.

Tip:

  • When riding your Quick Haul, change gears the same way you would on an acoustic (non-electric) bike. This helps you maintain the best cadence for your riding style and assures you’ll get the most out of your Quick Haul’s e-assist.

3.2 Brakes

Your Quick Haul has excellent stopping power thanks to the front and rear hydraulic disc brakes that come equipped.

When you are looking at your handlebar from the rider’s position, the rear brake lever is on the right, and the front brake lever is on the left. In a few countries this orientation can be reversed. If you’re not sure which lever is for the front or rear brakes on your Quick Haul, please test each one yourself before you go for a ride.

In general, aim to apply even pressure to both front and rear brakes when stopping your Quick Haul. Suddenly pulling hard on the brakes can be dangerous, especially when the road is wet or slippery.

Safety Tip:

  • Keep an eye on your Quick Haul’s brake pads, especially if your normal routes include steep descents. Brake pads wear out over time, and it’s important that you have the maximum stopping power available whenever you ride.

4. Vertical Parking and Vertical Rolling

Taking your Quick Haul into elevators and parking it indoors is a breeze thanks to how easily the Quick Haul can be vertically parked and vertically rolled. With just a little bit of practice, you’ll quickly become an expert at using your bike vertically.

To vertically roll and park your Quick Haul:

  1. Stand on one side of the bike and hold the handlebar with both hands.
  2. Apply the rear brake to lock the back wheel in place, preventing it from spinning.
  3. While applying the rear brake, walk backwards until the bike stands up. The front of the bike will rotate up, rotating on the locked back wheel. You don’t need to lift the bike up for it to stand vertically. In fact, it’s much easier to simply let the bike rotate into the vertical position instead of trying to lift it up.
  4. Vertically roll your Quick Haul by releasing the rear brake and gently rolling the bike forward while gripping the handlebar.
  5. Vertically park your Quick Haul by making sure all of the contact points on the rear of the bike are touching the floor, and that the bike is parked on a flat, even surface.

5. Daily Riding Checklist

Safety should be your top priority when you ride. To make sure your Quick Haul is ready to keep you safe, we recommend performing the ABCQ test before every ride. The ABCQ test is a daily riding safety checklist for your bike’s essential components. It helps you spot any growing issues so you can stop them before they become full-fledged problems.

6. Maintenance

Riding your Quick Haul is a great way to replace car trips with bike trips. But just like a car, the Quick Haul needs regular maintenance to keep it safe, riding well, and in tip-top shape. Fortunately, the most important maintenance and inspection for bicycles is easy to do at home. In most cases it only takes a few minutes of your time.

6.1 Clean and Lubricate Your Chain

Your Quick Haul has many moving parts, and the chain is one of the parts that moves the most. It’s important to protect the chain from excessive wear and tear by keeping it well lubricated and clean. Bicycle chains naturally accumulate dirt and grime when riding, so regular cleaning and lubricating helps your chain last longer.

We have a helpful video on basic bike maintenance, and it includes detailed information about how to clean and lubricate bicycles chains. If you’ve never lubricated a bike’s chain before, this is a great place to start learning.

Once you’ve lubricated the chain on your Quick Haul, check to make sure that there isn’t any extra lubricant dripping from the chain when you are done. You can use a clean rag to wipe away any extra lubricant you find.

If you’re not sure what you should lubricate your chain with, your local Tern dealer will be able to recommend a good lubricant that’s locally available.

6.2 Check if Your Wheels are Trued

Are the wheels on your Quick Haul trued (or in other words, are they straight?) You should check this on a regular basis by spinning your wheels while the Quick Haul is vertically parked. As the wheels are spinning, look for any abnormal side-to-side motion in the wheel. Look and listen to see that the disc brake rotor is not rubbing against the brake pads. If you discover that something is worn, damaged, or just looks out of place, bring your Quick Haul to your dealer for a more thorough inspection.

6.3 Check for Signs of Wear

With time, parts such as the chain, brake pads, and tires will begin to wear on your Quick Haul. It’s important to regularly make a visual inspection of these parts. If you notice signs of wear on these or any others, visit your dealer to have them replaced.

6.4 Regular Service Check-Up

All e-bikes need to be serviced regularly. We recommend that you bring your Quick Haul back to your dealer for regular check-ups.

In case you’re not sure when to take your bike in for a check-up, we recommend the following schedule:

First month or 200 km (125 miles)

Bring your bike back to your dealer for a quick tune-up one month after use, or once your bike has traveled 200 km (125 miles), whichever comes first.

Every six months or 1000 km (620 miles)

Take your bike in for professional maintenance every 6 months, or once your bike has traveled about 1000 km (620 miles).

Prompted by wrench icon on Bosch system display

Your dealer may use your Quick Haul’s onboard computer to set customized service intervals based on the riding conditions in your area. So, if you see a wrench icon in the lower-right corner of your bike’s screen, it’s time to take your bike in for service.

7. Accessories

At Tern, we believe in making useful bikes that will simply help you do more. Pairing your Quick Haul with the right accessories is key to unlocking your bike’s full potential and will help make it the perfect tool for you.

We have a compatibility checker for all our bike accessories. Use it to see which accessories work with your Quick Haul–or with any of our other bikes, in case you’ve bought from us before.

7.1 Passenger-Carrying Accessories

With the right accessories, your Quick Haul can safely carry one passenger on the rear rack. The rear rack is rated to carry up to 50 kg (about 110 lbs). It’s important that the total weight of your passenger, rear rack accessories, and cargo not exceed 50 kg.

When you’re deciding on a passenger setup, consider your passenger’s height, weight, and the weather conditions you’ll be riding in. Your passenger’s safety is your top priority (just as it’s ours as well), and we recommend following the Tern Passenger System to make your Quick Haul as safe as possible.

The Tern Passenger System is a set of four elements needed to safely carry a passenger:

  • Seating: Purpose-built rear seating, chosen according to the passenger’s needs
  • Handhold: Something for the passenger to hold on to, other than the bike frame itself
  • Foot support: Dedicated foot support on both sides of the bike
  • Foot and leg protection: Something to prevent feet and legs from getting caught in the spinning wheel

For safety, it’s essential to include all four elements every time you carry a passenger.

To learn more about the ins and outs of safely using your Quick Haul to carry passengers, read through our guide to safely carrying passengers on the Quick Haul.

Also, in case you want to carry a young passenger and your area gets a lot of rain, we highly recommend the Clubhouse Fort Mini. The Clubhouse Fort Mini is a combination of three accessories that turns the back of your bike into a weather-protected compartment for a child passenger. It’s especially helpful for protecting against rain, wind, and also UV rays.

7.2 Cargo-Carrying Accessories

When it comes to cargo-carrying accessories, you have a lot of useful options for your Quick Haul. The accessories you choose really depend on how you want to use your bike and what you want to use it for.

In addition to your Quick Haul’s rear rack, you’ll also find the Combo Mount, a burley frame mount for multiple cargo options, located on the front of the bike. From an extra rack to a basket or even a bag, the Combo Mount lets you outfit your Quick Haul with even more luggage-carrying capacity.

Your Quick Haul is proven to be reliable and safe when it comes to hauling large amounts of cargo. But do be aware that even your Quick Haul has limits to how much it can carry. The Maximum Gross Vehicle Weight (MGVW) of your Quick Haul is 150 kg (331 lbs). As long as you don’t go over that weight between your cargo, your accessories, the bike, and yourself, your Quick Haul should work wonderfully as your personal transporter.
