How to Fit the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat on the Tern Cargo Rack

How to Fit the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat on the Tern Cargo Rack

To successfully install the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat it is recommended to test the Child Seat with your Child in the seat on your bike before purchasing. Checking the sizing of all items together on your bike can ensure that there are no limitations for expected usage.

1. Requirement

1.1. Load Capacity

The Tern Cargo Rack is EN 14872 approved and can safely carry up to 25 kg. The Yepp Child Seat weighs 5 kg. Your child should weigh no more than 20 kg.

[!] The entire load capacity on most Tern bikes is 105 kg. This includes rider weight, other accessories, Cargo Rack, Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat and the child’s weight. Please check the individual bike’s specification page for its maximum weight limit.

1.2. Heel Clearance

Heel clearance will be affected by:

  • Bike frame size
  • Cargo Rack mounting position
  • Child Seat footrest position and Child’s toes
  • Rider foot size

2. Bike Compatibility

2.1. Bike Model

The Cargo Rack and Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat fit on most model year 2015 or later Vektron, Verge, Eclipse, Link, Node and model year 2016 or later Joe P27 bikes. The Child Seat does not fit on Joe C21, D24, P24, Castro and Swoop bikes.

2.2. Frame Weld

For some Eclipse models, the Rack’s mounts are welded on the Seat stays. Check that the mount has an all-around-weld and not a tack weld.

All around weld.

If the rack mount on your bike looks like this, it is safe to use a Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat on the Cargo Rack.

Tack weld.
If the rack mount on your bike looks like this, it is NOT suitable to use a Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat on the Cargo Rack.

3. Adjustment and Fitting

3.1. Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat’s Center of Gravity

The Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat has a center of gravity mark

The seat’s center of gravity should not be more than 90 mm behind the rear wheel axle, to avoid the front wheel tilting up.

3.2. Foot Rest Adjustment

Riders can expect to have enough heel clearance when the child’s footrest is adjusted to position 1 or 2. If adjusted to position 3, 4 or 5 riders are not guaranteed to have enough heel clearance.

Make sure there is enough clearance between the rider’s heels and the child’s feet.

3.2. Cargo Rack Adjustment

The Cargo Rack has adjustable feet and stays for more heel clearance. The rack should be mounted as low as possible while providing enough heel clearance to ride comfortably. Check the Cargo Rack User Manual to make proper adjustments here.

Note: For 20" bikes (Link, Verge, and Vektron), the rack needs to be adjusted to the highest position to provide enough heel clearance.

4. Installation Instructions for Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat on Cargo Rack

For Cargo Rack installation instructions, please download the manual here.

Installation video from Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat can be found here.

Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat should be installed on the two perpendicular rails on the Cargo Rack, closest to the seatpost.

Step 1: Insert the front groove of the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat into the rail of the Cargo Rack closest to the seatpost.

Step 2: Looking from the rear, ensure that the seat is centered on the Cargo Rack.

Step 3: Push the seat down towards the Cargo Rack so the integrated lock is snugly beneath the second rail of the Cargo Rack.

Step 4: Turn the grey knob clockwise until the lock beneath goes to a full distance beyond the second rail of the Cargo Rack.

Step 5: Wrap the Front Strap around the Seatpost

Step 6: Adjust the loop of the Front Strap as necessary and wrap the excess strap around the loop.

Step 7: For theft prevention, lock the seat onto the rack using the key that came with the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat.

Step 8: Check for the center of gravity marking.

Step 9: Place a tape measurer on the center of gravity marking and pull towards the non-drive side of the bike until it reaches the hub axle. The distance between the hub axle’s center and the seat’s center of gravity should not exceed 90 mm. When properly positioned (less than 90 mm behind the rear axle), the bike will not tilt backwards when a child is seated.

We recommend you check for tilting at your local bike shop prior to purchasing the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat. If it exceeds the range above, try lowering the Cargo Rack and measure again.

Step 10: Adjust the foot rest of the Yepp Maxi Easyfit Child Seat to adapt to your child’s height.

Step 11: Test ride to ensure that the seat is secure and check for the rider’s heel clearance. If the rider’s foot touches the seat’s foot rest, adjust foot rest as necessary.

Step 12: To remove, please follow the steps above in the reverse order.
