Looking For a GSD-Compatible Trailer?

GSD + Trailers

We know many riders chose the GSD to carry their little ones. Here's the essential compatibility information you'll need if you're interested in adding a bike trailer to your setup.

This article describes two trailer attachment methods:

  • Frame-mounted, compatible with the GSD S10 and S00
  • Thru-axle, compatible with the GSD S10 only

1. Frame-Mounted Method

For GSD S10 and S00

The GSD frame has already been tested for strength by EFBE Prüftechnik GmbH, one of Europe's leading bicycle test laboratories. But we wanted to go one step further and do one additional test to include a frame-mounted bike trailer.

So we've partnered with EFBE again to test the GSD frame according to EN15918, a European standard for trailer safety. In short, the GSD has exceeded the test requirements for a trailer of up to 53 kg attached to the rear mount of the bike frame.(For reference, 53 kg is what you'd be carrying if you had two 18-kg kids in a 17-kg trailer.)

What You'll Need

  • GSD
  • M10-compatible trailer mount

Most trailers come with a hitch cup designed to fit an M10 bolt. If you are not sure what the hitch cup looks like, here are two examples from Thule and Burley.

Using an M10 bolt, attach the trailer hitch cup to the GSD frame, on the same mounting point used for the Sidekick Lower Deck:

If using this method, please keep in mind that the left-sided Cargo Hold Pannier may interfere with trailer arm movement and should be removed. The new Cargo Hold 37 Panniers that we've designed for the Tern HSD also fit the GSD and offer plenty of room for trailer arm movement.

Notes

  • When testing your trailer, please remember to check the trailer's arm angle to make sure the arm will not hit the GSD frame when maneuvering the bike.
  • This method is compatible with:
  • Yepp seat(s)
  • Sidekick Wheel Guard
  • Right-sided Cargo Hold Pannier
  • Cargo Hold 37 Panniers
  • This method is NOT compatible with:
  • Sidekick Lower Deck
  • Left-sided Cargo Hold Pannier

2. Thru-Axle Method

For GSD S10 only
The Robert Axle Project offers a thru-axle that allows for even weight distribution when adding a kid trailer to your GSD.
