Tern Physis Handlepost - Award-winning folding bike technology

Physis 3D Handlepost

The new benchmark

Five patented technologies and unique manufacturing technology add up to the strongest, stiffest folding handlepost available. The Physis uses a special manufacturing process called 3D forging, which forms the post from a single piece of aluminum, eliminating all welds.

No Flex

To eliminate flex, the Physis uses a massive joint knuckle and a post that gradually tapers from thick at the base to thin. Moreover, it has 150% more clamping height between the fork steerer and the handlepost than common designs.

Flux Technology

The base of the Physis is machined so it functions as the upper race of the headset. This patented direct integration contributes to the incredible stiffness of the design.

Interlocking Halves

Joint surfaces lock together to improve torsional stiffness. We've fine-tuned the shape to virtually eliminate squeaks.

Redundant Double Bolts

Two bolts clamp the Physis to the fork steerer for improved safety.

igus® Bearings

The patented design puts sliding bearings between the moving parts so the folding action is always smooth and friction-free.

Large, Smooth Lever

Large rounded surfaces are easy on your hands and provide good leverage for easy operation.

AutoLok Technology

Close the lever and it automatically locks in place, for extra, easy security—using an aluminum pin.

Floating Point Technology

Patented technology allows the lever to fold flat and brace against the joint for protection in transit.

SpringLock Technology

Patented SpringLock technology holds the adjustment rod firmly in place so the locking lever is always properly tensioned and can never vibrate loose.

Serviceable

Good things are built to last and that’s why the Physis is designed to be fully dealer serviceable. We keep every part in stock and replacing the bearings can be done in minutes.

TriSeal Design

Three rubber seals keep weather out and the headset bearings functioning smoothly.

Precision-Machined

A machining tolerance of only 50 microns ensures a tight fit and eliminates looseness and rattling.

Stainless Steel Bolts

Cold-worked stainless hardware delivers the durability and reliability needed for daily riding.

Tern Andros Stem - Adjustable Bike Stem

Andros Stem

Adjust to fit

The Andros is our patented adjustable stem that lets you set your handlebars where you want—no tools, no fuss. In just seconds, you can set your riding position to long and low in a tough headwind, or upright and comfy for riding around town. You decide how you want to ride and the Andros makes your bike fit.

Quick Release

Patented quick-release, tool-free design is easy to operate.

TwinStem Design

The Andros design uses two stems, spaced widely apart for excellent torsional stiffness.

Fits the Family

Accommodates riders of all sizes so one bike can be shared by multiple riders.

Forged Construction

The patented design is FEA optimized and fully forged for maximum strength with minimum weight.

Built to Last

Stainless hardware and brass bushings for long-term durability.

Telescopic Seatpost

Telescopic Seatpost

LONGER SEATPOST. SMALLER FOLD.

This seatpost is perfect for tall riders or anyone who likes a compact fold. It extends 90 mm longer than our stock seatpost, but thanks to its unique design, it’s 120 mm shorter when retracted. It features a dual-bolt head design for precise saddle adjustment, and an inner post diameter of 27.2 mm, so you can customize it with other posts.

Bosch Purion Control Panel

COMPACT CONTROL CENTER

The on-board computer lets you switch between five different riding modes, and feeds you handy information like speed, battery level, and distance. It optimizes shifting actions and constantly updates you on the remaining range, just like a typical German car. Best of all, it’s now more compact and robust than ever.

Valo Light: Dynamo-Powered Front Bike Light

Valo Direct Light

Immediate illumination

Our 41 lux, 150 lumen Valo Direct lights up your ride without adding the drag or weight of a dynamo. It’s engineered to sit inside the handlebar stem, where it’s safe from knocks, bumps, and theft. That means it’s protected while folding, and optimally positioned to give you the most light.

Herrmann’s Expertise

We designed the Valo with Herrmans, the Finnish lighting experts who have a side business making lights for massive earth tunneling machines. No surprise then that the Valo is ready for all weather conditions: it’s made from cold-resistant ABS with built-in water management channels.

Extra Bright

The Valo puts out 41 lux of light, 4x brighter than the European requirement for bicycle lighting. That means you get a bright, wide beam of light that makes cycling at night safe and reassuring.

Clarity Optics

The Valo has a carefully shaped mirror that optimizes the beam pattern for cycling. It is wide, so you can see potential obstacles or hazards on the side of the road. It is even, without hotspots, so your night vision is not compromised. And it is clipped at the top of the beam pattern so you don’t blind oncoming cyclists or motorists.

Side Lighting

The Valo has light channels on each side so that you are visible to cars approaching from the sides. For additional safety, the Valo has two additional LED’s on each side, which light up when you’re stopped at a traffic light.

Visor

The Valo protects your sensitive night vision with a small visor that blocks light from shining back into your eyes.

Patented CryoCore Design

LED lights need to run cool to work optimally. If they run too hot over a period of time, they gradually lose brightness. Most LED lights have a tiny button sized heat sink that is used to dissipate heat. Our patented design connects the Valo to the handlebar so the entire bar is used as a massive heat sink.

720 Visbility

720° Visibility

See and be seen

You need to be safe when you’re out on the road. That’s why we’ve designed our hard-core commuter bikes with 720° Visibility: 360° of active lighting and 360° of reflectivity.

360° Active Lighting

Specially designed lights allow you to be seen from all angles when it’s dark out. Accidents often occur at 90° angles at an intersection so active side lighting is especially important.

360° Reflectivity

Bright car headlights can overwhelm the active lights on a bike and this is why reflectivity is important: the brighter a car’s headlights, the brighter the reflective patches shining back at the driver. Bikes with 360° Reflectivity are visible from every angle to oncoming cars.
