Customizing Rohloff E-14 on the GSD R14
The GSD R14 (Gen 3) pairs Bosch eShift with the Rohloff E-14 electronic shifting system. With a 526% gear range, the Rohloff E-14 provides the low gears needed for steep climbs and heavy cargo while offering closely spaced gear ratios that make it easy to maintain a comfortable pedaling cadence. The GSD R14 was Tern's first bike to feature Bosch eShift. In addition to the core benefits of Bosch eShift, the Rohloff E-14 also introduced several advanced features that further enhance the riding experience:
- Multishift (Shift 4 gears by pressing and holding the gear shifter)
- Automatic Downshift (Automatically shift to gear 7 after coming to a stop)
- Shift While Coasting (Shift gears when not pedaling)
In October 2025, Rohloff released the E-14 2.0 firmware update, adding cadence-based automatic shifting and expanding the capabilities of Bosch eShift on the Rohloff E-14.
Current GSD R14 models come with this firmware pre-installed. Earlier GSD R14 models can be updated to unlock these features. The following section explains how to update the firmware. If your bike already has the latest firmware, you can skip ahead to the other guides on how to customize the Rohloff E-14 settings on the GSD R14.

Updating firmware on your GSD R14
To use the latest Bosch eShift features, both the Bosch Smart System and the Rohloff E-14 must be running the latest firmware.
Before You Begin
Before updating the firmware, make sure you have the Bosch eBike Flow app and Rohloff E-14 2.0 app installed on a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. We also recommend vertically parking your GSD R14 so you can easily access the barcode on the underside of the Rohloff shifter unit.
Step 1: Update the Rohloff E-14 Firmware
1. Open the Rohloff E-14 2.0 app and scan or manually enter the pairing code on the underside of the Rohloff shifter unit to pair your GSD R14 with the app.
2. Once paired, open Settings in the Rohloff app and install the latest Rohloff E-14 firmware.
Step 2: Update the Bosch Smart System
1. Open the Bosch eBike Flow app and check for available updates. Install any available software updates for the Bosch Smart System.
Once both updates are complete, the new Bosch eShift features become available. The following video demonstrates how to update the Rohloff E-14 firmware.
Automatic shifting modes using the Rohloff E-14 explained
If your GSD R14 is running the latest Rohloff and Bosch firmware, it supports Auto Shift. Auto Shift includes three modes that let you choose how much assistance Bosch eShift provides. You can switch between the modes at any time using the Rohloff E-14 shifter.
- Manual (M): Shift gears manually using the electronic shifter. Bosch eShift provides smooth, electronic gear changes but does not shift automatically. You can also shift gears while coasting.
- Manual+ (M+): Shift gears manually while pedaling. When coasting, Bosch eShift automatically shifts to maintain your selected cadence, so you're in the right gear when you start pedaling again.
- Automatic (A): Bosch eShift automatically shifts up and down while you ride to maintain your selected pedaling cadence.
Changing Shifting Modes
When you power on the Kiox 300, the current shifting mode is displayed as an M (Manual), M+ (Manual+), or A (Automatic) icon. To switch modes:
Place your index finger behind the buttons and your thumb over them, then pinch and hold both buttons on the Rohloff E-14 shifter. Release the buttons when the desired shifting mode appears on the display.

Manual+ mode:
Tip: There's no best shifting mode. Experiment with all three to find the one that best matches your riding style and the type of riding you do.
Customizing your cadence for automatic shifting
Automatic shifting uses your preferred pedaling cadence as the target for gear selection. The default cadence is 75 rpm, but you can customize it to match your riding style. To change the cadence:
1. Power on the Kiox 300.
2. Press and hold the Select button to enter Settings. If eShift Settings is not already selected, scroll to it.
3. Use the + and – buttons to adjust the cadence.
4. Press and hold the Select button to save the updated settings.
Tip: There's no right or wrong cadence setting. Try different cadences until you find what feels most comfortable. A lower cadence creates a firmer pedal feel, while a higher cadence makes pedaling feel lighter.
Customizing the automatic downshift gear
By default, the Rohloff E-14 automatically downshifts to 7th gear when you come to a stop, making it easier to start pedaling again. If you prefer a different starting gear, or want to disable Automatic Downshift altogether, you can change these settings in the Bosch eBike Flow app.
1. In the Bosch eBike Flow app, go to Settings and select eShift.
2. In the eShift settings, you can change the automatic downshift to a higher or lower starting gear to match your preferred pedaling feel. You can also disable Automatic Downshift if you prefer to select the starting gear yourself.
Tip: The ideal automatic downshift gear depends on the ride. If you're carrying more cargo, riding into strong headwinds, or climbing hills, try a lower starting gear. For lighter loads or flatter routes, a higher starting gear may feel more natural.
Enable or disable Multishift
Multishift allows you to shift through multiple gears by pressing and holding a shift button. On the GSD R14, pressing and holding the higher- or lower-gear button shifts four gears in that direction.
To turn Multishift on or off:
1. Open the Rohloff app and go to Settings. Select Multishift Settings.
2. Toggle Multishift On or Off based on your preference.
