Towing a Trailer with the GSD Gen 1

Heads up!

This article mentions third-party trailer hitches that are not manufactured by Tern. Please note that hitch designs might change, and that their manufacturers may choose to maintain the same product name even after the design has changed.

For your safety, always consult with your bike dealer, or with the bike trailer manufacturer or reseller, to make sure you have the right components to safely tow your trailer.

This article refers to GSD Gen 1 bikes.

We know many riders chose the GSD to carry their little ones. In this article, we cover the two best methods to attach a trailer to your bike.

1. Frame-Mounted Method

For GSD S10 and S00

The GSD frame has already been tested for strength by EFBE Prüftechnik GmbH, one of Europe's leading bicycle test laboratories. But we wanted to go one step further and do one additional test to include a frame-mounted bike trailer.

So we've partnered with EFBE again to test the GSD frame according to EN15918, a European standard for trailer safety. In short, the GSD has exceeded the test requirements for a trailer of up to 53 kg attached to the rear mount of the bike frame.

(For reference, 53 kg is what you'd be carrying if you had two 18-kg kids in a 17-kg trailer.)

What trailer hitches are compatible with the GSD frame?

Many trailers come with a hitch cup designed to fit an M10 bolt. We have tested and can recommend the following trailer hitches for the GSD Gen 1 frame:

You don’t need an adapter for any of the brands mentioned above, but you may need additional nuts and bolts, depending on what comes in your trailer package.

Where do I mount the trailer hitch?

Using an M10 bolt, attach the trailer hitch cup to the GSD frame, on the same mounting point used for the Sidekick Lower Deck:

Can I use panniers or other accessories and tow a trailer at the same time?

It depends on the accessory. If using this method, please keep in mind that the left-sided Cargo Hold Pannier may interfere with trailer arm movement and should be removed. As an alternative, the smaller Cargo Hold 37 Panniers offer plenty of room for trailer arm movement.

If using this method, please keep in mind that the left-sided Cargo Hold Pannier may interfere with trailer arm movement and should be removed. The new Cargo Hold 37 Panniers that we've designed for the Tern HSD also fit the GSD and offer plenty of room for trailer arm movement.

2. Thru-Axle Method

For GSD S10 only
The Robert Axle Project offers a thru-axle that allows for even weight distribution when adding a kid trailer to your GSD:

This product is compatible with several kid trailers, and you can find this information on the website, under Specification.

3. Always Pay Attention to Safety Guidelines

No matter what trailer or hitch system you choose, it's always best to test it yourself before using it to carry children, pets, or cargo. Pay particular attention to the trailer's arm angle; make sure it won't hit the GSD when maneuvering the bike.

In addition, always stay within your bike's max gross vehicle weight. The GSD has a MGVW of 200 kg (440 lb), and that means your whole setup—including bike, trailer, accessories, cargo, passenger(s), and rider—should not exceed that limit. The only exception is if your trailer has its own braking system.

One important reminder: To safely carry your loved ones, finding a compatible trailer is only the first step. Always follow the safety guidelines of the trailer manufacturer. Exceeding the trailer's weight limit or using it in ways it wasn't designed to be used may pose a serious risk, and should be avoided.
