Similarities across all GSD models
Each GSD cargo eBike is built to help you Get Stuff Done, with a robust set of shared features.
Here’s just some of what you can expect from all GSD models:
- Best-in-class hauling capacity: A maximum load rating of 210 kg (463 lb), with a rear rack capacity of 100 kg (220 lb) means these bikes can handle some serious hauls, whether it’s groceries or passengers.
- Powerful Bosch Cargo Line motor: This cargo-optimized motor delivers up to 85 Nm of torque and 400% pedal-assist support, making it easier to carry heavy loads and tackle hills.
- Dual-battery compatibility: With two battery bays available, just pop in a second battery and you’re set to enjoy longer rides with sustained support.
- Dependable kickstand: The patented Atlas Lockstand features auto-lock, remote unlock, and integrated foot extensions for a super stable loading experience. Plus, a handy protector keeps the kickstand lock free of mud and debris.
- Size-inclusive cockpit: Featuring a low step-through height and tool-free handlebar & seatpost adjustments, the cockpit comfortably fits riders of all sizes, 150 - 200 cm (4’11” - 6’7”) tall and up to 130 kg (287 lb).
- Vertical parking & rolling: A cleverly designed tail end lets you navigate through tight spaces like hallways, into elevators, and park your cargo bike securely indoors—even in apartments.
- Verified strength & safety: The frame and fork are put through rigorous testing to ensure they meet the German DIN 79010 cargo bike safety standard for the bike’s 210 kg (463 lb) weight rating, while the entire eBike system (including the battery and charger) is certified to UL 2849 for the best fire & electrical safety.
Each model in the GSD lineup has these core features, making any choice a smart one if you’re looking for a viable car replacement. That said, each model also has its own unique features to match different rider needs and preferences. Let’s take a look.
Key differences to consider
1. Bosch Smart System or eBike System 2
Smart vs straightforward e-bike experience
The GSD is built around either the Bosch Smart System or Bosch eBike System 2. Having the Smart System means your GSD is a fully-networked smart e-bike with direct access to a host of IoT features and services offered by Bosch, including electronic lock for the motor, smart alarm, GPS tracking, navigation, and over-the-air updates. Like all smart tech, the Smart System aims to enhance your overall e-bike experience, and even provides a range of customization options for those looking to maximize their ride.

However, not everyone is after “the latest and greatest” digitally-connected cycling experience! For those who just want a tried-and-tested system that still lets them get the job done with finesse, the Bosch eBike System 2 checks all the right boxes with the added bonus of coming at a lower price point than the Smart System.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
Available on the GSD R14 and S10, Bosch eBike ABS is a Smart System feature that prevents your wheels from locking up during emergency braking or slippery conditions. The system uses sensors on each wheel to monitor speed and detect when a wheel is about to lock up. If that happens, a control unit signals the brakes to quickly adjust the brake pressure—releasing and reapplying it in pulses so the bike brakes in mini intervals. This allows the tires to maintain traction and keeps the wheels rolling, helping you brake smoothly and stay in control during hard stops.
Battery capacity & compatibility
The Smart System offers higher-capacity batteries—up to 800 Wh—making it a great choice for riders who need extended range for longer commutes, touring, or carrying heavy loads. On the other hand, the eBike System 2 supports batteries up to 500 Wh, which may sound smaller, but still deliver plenty of power for most everyday rides. And with both systems supporting dual-battery setups, you can always add a second battery for even more range when needed.
One of the handy things about Bosch systems is that their batteries and chargers are interchangeable within the same system. So if someone in your household already rides a Bosch-powered bike, choosing a GSD with the same system means you can easily share batteries and chargers between bikes. It’s a small detail that can make charging and battery management a whole lot simpler, especially for families.
2. Drivetrain options
The GSD offers a range of drivetrain options to match your riding style, whether you prefer the clean, low-maintenance appeal of a belt drive or the classic feel of a chain. You can also choose between an internally geared hub (IGH) or a derailleur system. IGHs are sealed off from the elements and dirt, making them long-lasting and virtually maintenance-free. They allow shifting at a stop—great for stop-and-go city riding. Derailleurs, on the other hand, are lightweight and efficient, offering crisp, responsive shifting. They are also easier to service, and many riders find regular maintenance simple enough to do themselves.

3. Bells & whistles
All GSDs are packed with thoughtful features to make every ride smoother, easier, and more enjoyable—but the GSD R14 and S10 take it even further with extra comforts and conveniences. Think a Cane Creek suspension seatpost that smooths out bumps in the road, an EasyAccess charging port right on the top tube for plugging in your bike without bending down, and a handy USB-C power port for charging your devices on the go. You’ll also find upgrades like a one-touch Hi/Lo beam switch for better visibility, and Schwalbe Pick-Up cargo bike tires for extra grip and durability.
These little details might not be a big deal for everyone—after all, the GSD is already an awesome bike. But for those who appreciate an extra-smooth ride and a little added convenience, they could be the “it” factor.
