Using a Child Seat on the Vektron Folding eBike
Heads up!
This article mentions third-party child seats that are not manufactured by Tern. Please note that child seat designs might change, and that their manufacturers may choose to maintain the same product name even after the design has changed.
For your safety, always consult with your bike dealer, or with the child seat manufacturer or reseller, to make sure you have the right seats to safely carry your kid(s).
The Vektron folding electric bike is equipped with a compact yet sturdy rear rack, allowing it to carry lighter cargo or one compatible child seat for a young kid. However, balance can get tricky and it’s easy to overload when riding with a young child on a folding bike.
Here’s everything you need to know for safely using a child seat on the Vektron.
Weight limits & restrictions
- The Vektron has a Max Gross Vehicle Weight (MGVW) of 125 kg (276 lb). This means the weight of the bike (plus the battery) + accessories (including the child seat) + rider and passenger + any cargo must be LESS than the MGVW for safe riding.
- The Vektron’s Atlas V Rear Rack is rated to 27 kg (60 lb).
- The Vektron is a leisure folding e-bike with the ability to carry lighter loads. It is NOT intended for hauling heavy cargo or passengers who exceed the child seat manufacturer's age and weight recommendations.
Compatible child seats
Only use child seats that conform to the EN 14344 standard on the Vektron. Child seats should always include the required elements for safe passenger carrying: seating, safety harness, foot support, and foot & leg protection.
We've tested the following clamp-style, rear-rack mounted child seats with the Vektron for compatibility:
- Thule Yepp Maxi
- Thule Yepp 2 Maxi
- Bobike Go Maxi
- Urban Iki (carrier mounting)
If you're looking at a different child seat model, check with your Tern dealer to confirm compatibility. You can also refer to the Vektron’s rear rack specs below to see if it will fit.

Installing the child seat
Follow the child seat manufacturer’s instructions for mounting the child seat on the Vektron’s rear rack.
Mounting tips for stability
- Install the child seat as close to the saddle as possible, while still ensuring the cyclist’s feet do not touch the child seat while pedaling.
- Find the center of gravity mark on the outside of your child seat. Make sure it’s no more than 10 cm (3.94”) behind the rear wheel axle for the most stable positioning.
Friendly reminders
- Check your local regulations to make sure carrying passengers on a bike is legal in your area.
- Always follow the child seat manufacturer’s instructions for use and care, and never exceed the recommended age or weight limits.
- The combined weight loaded onto the Atlas V Rear Rack, including the weight of the child seat and your child, must not exceed the rack’s 27 kg (60 lb) load limit.
- Do not exceed the Vektron’s max gross vehicle weight of 125 kg (276 lb).
- Before riding with your child on the Vektron, get used to how the bike handles when loaded. Strap some weight to the child seat and practice riding in a safe, traffic-free area first.
- Do not leave a child unattended on the bike, even if it is on the kickstand.
- Helmets are cool! Rider and passenger are advised to wear an approved helmet.
