This article mentions third-party products that are not manufactured by Tern. Please note that product designs might change, and that their manufacturers may choose to maintain the same product name even after the design has changed.

For your safety, always consult with your bike dealer, or with the product manufacturer or reseller, to make sure you have the right components to safely ride the bike.

More and more riders are bringing their four-legged friends along for the journey, and Tern bike and e-bike owners have three great options when choosing a pet carrier for bike riding: the RuffHouse, the Doghouse Mini, and a dog bike trailer. From small chihuahuas to big labradors, there’s a setup designed to fit different dogs and Tern bikes.

Here’s a simple guide that walks you through the features and compatibility of each pet carrier option to help you choose the right one, along with helpful tips for riding safely and comfortably with your pet.

What is the RuffHouse?

The RuffHouse is a soft-sided dog bag carrier for bike trips with small dogs or extroverted cats up to 7 kg (15 lb). It mounts securely to the Transporteur Rack at the front of compatible bikes, so you can keep your buddy comfortably within sight throughout the ride. Mesh panels on all four sides provide excellent ventilation, while the zippered convertible top rolls open so your pet can sit up, peek out, and enjoy the view. An integrated safety tether clips to the harness to help prevent sudden jumps if something exciting catches their attention.

It also includes practical features that all pet parents will appreciate. Zippered side pockets rest over the rack rails, giving you space to store treats, waste bags, or even a collapsible water bowl. The bottom pad is removable and made from a non-absorbent material, so it can be taken out and hosed off for easy cleaning. Three snap buckles secure the RuffHouse to the front rack and allow you to remove it quickly from the bike when needed.

What is the Doghouse Mini?

The Doghouse Mini is a rear-mounted soft pet crate, designed to fit small to medium-sized dogs up to 13.5 kg (30 lb). It’s a pet carrier system that’s made up of three separate accessories, the Clubhouse Mini, Soft Crate Mini, and Dog Roof Mini, each sold individually, to create a secure and comfortable enclosed dog carrier on your bike’s rear rack. When not used for carrying your pet, the setup also functions as a practical 37 L rear cargo hauler for grocery and errand runs.

An external pocket offers convenient storage for small essentials, while the convertible roof features two zippered windows that can be opened, rolled up, and tucked away for adjustable airflow and open-air riding. Bright accents on the carrier help improve on-road visibility, keeping you and your pup safer during rides. The material is also easy to spray clean, making quick work of any mess.

What about bike trailers for dogs?

For riders who need extra space for passengers or cargo, or are traveling with larger dogs or multiple pets, a pet trailer is often the ideal solution. Pet trailers attach to the rear axle of your bike and roll behind you, freeing up the space on your front and rear rack. Some Tern cargo bikes such as the GSD, Orox, and Quick Haul Long even come with an integrated TowBar™ at the back, allowing a variety of bike trailers to be attached without the need of adapters.

Pet trailers are available in a wide range of sizes, including options for large and even XL dogs. For example, our good friends at Burley offer dedicated pet trailers that give your dog a safe, comfy seat to cruise along like the VIP (very important pup) they are.

Tips for how to bring your dog on a bike

Consult with your veterinarian or pet specialist if you have any questions or concerns about riding with your pet. Never leave your pet alone on the bike, even with the kickstand down, as they could wiggle and cause the bike to tip over.

1. Let your pup get comfortable first

Before your first ride, give your dog time to explore the carrier at home. Place it somewhere familiar so they can sniff around and settle in. Add their favorite blanket or toy to make it inviting. Some dogs warm up quickly, while others need time. Go slow, be patient, and use plenty of praise and treats!

2. Safety check before you roll

Make sure the carrier is properly installed and securely fastened to your bike. Always clip the safety tether to your dog’s harness—not their collar. Attaching to a collar can put dangerous pressure on their neck if they jump or shift suddenly.

3. Start with shorter rides

Start in a quiet area away from traffic and distractions. Keep the first few rides short and positive, such as a trip to a nearby park for playtime and treats, so your pup begins to associate the carrier ride with something fun. As they grow more relaxed and confident, you can slowly make your rides longer and explore farther together.

4. Keep an eye on comfort

Check in on your dog during the ride to make sure they’re comfortable and not too warm (or cold). Bring water, especially on hot days, and stop for breaks when needed. Many carrier setups include built-in storage that’s perfect for carrying water, treats, and other pet essentials.

5. Stay within weight limits

Always stay within your bike’s maximum gross vehicle weight limit, as well as the load limits of your racks and pet carrier. You can find these weight limits in the manufacturer’s product manual.

With the right setup and a little patience, you and your pup will be ready to head out, enjoy the breeze, and make plenty of tail-wagging memories together. Happy adventures ahead!
