How to Transport Your Orox by Car

How to Transport Your Orox by Car

The Orox is an adventure e-cargo bike made to venture into areas with challenging terrain, but reaching a trailhead might still require you to transport your Orox by car. This article provides recommendations on how to prepare your Orox for a car ride and bring it safely to your destination.

Fitting the Orox in your car

Not every car will fit the Orox, but if it does, here are some tips for you to place the bike in your car safely.

Step 1: Remove accessories, battery, and cargo

To minimize the weight you’ll need to lift and allow for more room in your car, we recommend removing certain accessories, the battery(ies), and cargo. You might need to remove bulkier accessories such as the Clubhouse and child seats. Don’t forget to pack any accessories you removed if you’re going to use them at your destination.

Step 2: Consider if you need to change your car seat configuration

Determine how much space you have in your car. If you think it’s necessary, fold the rear seat of your car, and place a sheet or blanket on the car floor to keep it clean. Using a sheet or blanket is especially important when you’ve just gone off-roading and your Orox is super muddy.

Step 3: Consider if you’d like to place the bike flat on the car floor or upright

If you’re placing the bike flat on the car floor:

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2. Place brake caliper spacers to prevent you from accidentally closing the brakes.
  3. Remember to also remove the front fenders and store these properly.
  4. Place the bike with the drive side up to prevent damaging the derailleur.

Alternatively, you could loosen the headset and place the handlebar parallel to the bike. This way, you also won’t need to remove the front fenders. See the photo below for reference.

Tip: Position the handlebar parallel to the bike to keep it compact, and you also won’t need to remove the fenders.

Place your Orox with the drive side up to avoid damaging the derailleur.

Other things to consider when placing the Orox in your car:

  • Pay extra attention to the brake rotors. Ensure they don’t bend or get contaminated.
  • Strap the Orox down and cover it to protect the bike parts and your car’s interior.
  • Bring tools to reassemble the front wheel, fenders, or some accessories at your destination.
  • To reduce the chance of damage, add padding such as bubble wrap, packing foam, or towels.

Can I use a bike rack to transport my Orox?

Some bike racks may fit the Orox, but we can't recommend products without testing them thoroughly. Here are a few points to get you in the right direction.

  • Consider hitch racks suitable for e-bikes, standard bikes, or both.
  • Check whether these bike racks accommodate large-volume tires, keeping in mind the tire width.
  • Consider also the different Orox frame sizes, and the weight of the bike with your accessories.
  • For a precise fit, verify the rack’s suitability for your car and the Orox, consult your Tern dealer, and test the rack with the bike rack vendor.
