GSD Gen 3 Cargo Basics
With a Max Gross Vehicle Weight of 210 kg (463 lb), the GSD Gen 3 is ready to handle a wide range of cargo needs, whether you’re running errands, stocking up on groceries, or transporting heavy gear.
Tern offers a versatile array of accessories to support your load, including racks, panniers, bags, baskets, and decks that attach to the rear, or the Combo Mount on the front of the GSD. The GSD Gen 3 features the Atlas Lockstand with built-in foot extensions, making it easier to access the kickstand—even with fully loaded panniers. The extensions provide a wider stance, adding extra stability for smoother loading and unloading. Customize your setup with add-ons that suit your lifestyle.
What is ‘Max Gross Vehicle Weight’?
Max Gross Vehicle Weight (MGVW) is the maximum weight a bike has been designed to safely carry. This means the weight of the Bicycle* + Accessories + Rider(s)** + Cargo + Trailer*** must be less than the MGVW for safe riding.

*Bicycle = Refers to the weight of the bike plus battery(ies)
**Rider(s) = Refers to the weight of the cyclist and any passengers
***Trailer = Refers to the weight of the trailer with no braking system AND the weight of any cargo or passenger(s) on the trailer. Trailers with a braking system should not be included in the MGVW calculation.
Why does Max Gross Vehicle Weight matter?
It comes down to safety. By adhering to the bike's MGVW guidelines, riders can feel confident that the bike can safely handle the total weight in all riding conditions.
How much cargo weight can I carry on a GSD Gen 3?

To determine the maximum cargo weight you can carry on the GSD, use the formula above. The GSD Gen 3 has an MGVW of 210 kg (463 lb). From that, simply subtract the weight of the GSD and any installed accessories, and the weight of the rider and any passengers on the bike. If you are towing a trailer, don't forget to also subtract the trailer's weight and any cargo or passenger(s) on the trailer. Please note that trailers with an independent braking system should not be included in the MGVW calculation.

For trailer towing and more
Need to haul something that won't fit on the GSD? Your best option is to use a trailer (or the Bike Tow Kit, if that something happens to be a bike). The GSD features a dedicated trailer mount that fits several trailer hitches—learn more about compatible trailer hitches here.
Some lower deck accessories such as the Cargo Hold 52 Panniers and Storm Box cover the GSD’s existing trailer mounting points. That’s why we created the Tail Hitch L to shift the mounting points further back, so you can have it all—tow a trailer and continue using your favorite panniers and other rear cargo-carrying accessories.

Tail Hitch L
The Tail Hitch L fits a range of trailer hitches to securely link a trailer to the GSD, letting you haul tons more without your panniers and lower deck accessories getting in the way.

The Bike Tow Kit lets you bring an extra bike along for any ride—whether that’s a mountain bike for your camping trip, or your kid’s bike when they decide waving to passersby is more fun than riding (it happens).
Weight: 0.5 kg (1.2 lb)
Riding with Cargo
Riding a GSD loaded with heavy cargo feels a little different than riding a regular bicycle. It’s a good idea to practice in a safe area before you go out on the road with your cargo.
The main thing you need to remember when riding with heavy cargo is that you’ll need extra time and space to decelerate and come to a stop. Use caution when approaching intersections and other braking situations. You’ll need to brake sooner and more gently than you may be used to.
- Because the rear rack can handle substantially more weight than a front rack, it’s a good idea to load your heaviest items onto the rear rack first. Then, use the front rack to carry lighter items.
- A low center of gravity is key for safe and easy handling. Place heavier items on the bottom of racks, panniers, baskets, and boxes.
- Make sure the cargo is balanced evenly on your bike. Avoid putting all of your heavy items on one side of the bike.
- Ensure that items are firmly secured to the bike. Use Batten Straps to tie down loose items and prevent them from moving around or falling off the bike during transport.
- Pay attention to the maximum capacity of any accessories you use with the bike.
- Most riders can comfortably carry 80% of their weight. Determine if you are comfortable carrying that much weight.
