How to Install Cargo Hold 37 Panniers on the GSD Gen 2

This article refers to GSD Gen 2 bikes, and mentions combinations that refer to Thule Yepp Maxi (version 1) child seats and Pannier Adapter Gen 1.

If you are considering (or already have) the Cargo Hold 37 Panniers for your GSD Gen 2, the key thing you should know is that there are two different ways you can install them on your bike—and each has its benefits. This article will explain the differences, the benefits, and the installation process.

What are the different pannier positions and benefits?

Due to its compact size, the Cargo Hold 37s can be installed in two different positions along the rear of the bike.

Frontmost position Rearmost position

In the frontmost position, the panniers allow you to use the GSD's integrated trailer mount, and to install one child seat such as the Thule Yepp Maxi, either in front or in the back, as long as the panniers are in Bucket Mode.

In the rearmost position, the panniers offer more legroom and foot support for a passenger. This position also lets you install one child seat such as the Thule Yepp Maxi, but only in the back, as long as the panniers are in Bucket Mode and its straps are secured with a Pannier Adapter.

How to install the Cargo Hold 37 Panniers in the frontmost position?

To install the panniers in the frontmost position, download the manual and follow the steps below:

  1. Using a long strap, secure the bottom of the pannier as indicated in the diagram above. The strap should go through the first (or last) attachment loop on the bottom of the pannier.
  2. Secure the upper straps, starting from the rear.
  3. Repeat this process on the other side of the bike.

Note: On the GSD Gen 2, the Cargo Hold 37s only require 4 attachment points. This means you'll end up with two unused straps.

How to install the Cargo Hold 37 Panniers in the rearmost position?

To install the panniers in the rearmost position, download the manual and follow the steps below:

  1. Using a long strap, secure the bottom of the pannier as indicated in the diagram above. The strap should go through the second (or fourth) attachment loop on the bottom of the pannier.
  2. Secure the upper straps, starting from the rear.
  3. Repeat this process on the other side of the bike.

Note: On the GSD Gen 2, the Cargo Hold 37s only require 4 attachment points. This means you'll end up with two unused straps.

Can I use Cargo Hold 37 Panniers with child seats?

Yes, you can! The Cargo Hold 37s work well with our top recommended child seat, the Thule Yepp Maxi.

One caveat: With the Cargo Hold 37s on your GSD Gen 2, you can only carry one child seat. If you'd like to fit two child seats, we highly recommend using the Cargo Hold 52 Panniers instead.

If this is your case and you are trying to figure out where to place the panniers, we recommend starting from your preferred child seat position, and then determining the pannier position:

CHILD SEAT POSITION PANNIER POSITION HOW TO USE
Front Frontmost Panniers in Bucket Mode
Rear Frontmost Panniers in Bucket Mode
Rearmost Panniers in Bucket Mode, and with a Pannier Adapter

After that, you might want to factor in the benefits of each pannier position; if you want to be able to carry a kid in a child seat plus another passenger in front, for example, then having the panniers in rearmost position makes a lot of sense, as it will give the bigger passenger more legroom and foot support.
