Everything You Need to Know About Bosch eBike ABS

Updated on

Imagine riding through a busy street on your e-bike when a car door suddenly swings open in front of you. You brake hard, yet thanks to the Bosch Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) you’re able to stay cool, calm, and in control, easily swerving past the clueless driver and giving them a look that says, “I didn’t even break a sweat”.

Curious how the antilock braking system on your e-bike helps to keep you, your precious cargo, and other road-users safe? Let’s explore further.

What is ABS?

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is a safety feature found in many vehicles, from cars and motorcycles to bicycles. It prevents your wheels from locking up during emergency braking or slippery conditions. By automatically regulating brake pressure, ABS reduces the risk of skidding and helps the vehicle maintain traction, giving you better control and improving overall safety.

When it comes to electric bikes, Bosch has leveraged mature technology from its automotive division to develop what many regard as the best antilock braking system for this vehicle category. To ensure optimal braking performance, Bosch eBike ABS is tailored to different types of eBikes with specific modes: ABS Cargo, ABS Touring, ABS Allroad, and ABS Trail. Each mode is fine-tuned to support your bike’s unique demands. For example, the ABS Cargo mode is designed specifically for e-cargo bikes, which carry heavy loads that put extra stress on the braking system. It offers quicker, safer, and more precise braking, even when fully loaded.

How ABS works

Bosch eBike ABS is made up of several key components that work seamlessly with compatible hydraulic braking systems from manufacturers like Magura. Here’s how it works:

  • Wheel sensors: Sensors on each wheel constantly monitor the speed of rotation to detect any sudden changes. A significant slowdown in one wheel suggests it’s about to lock up.
  • Control module: Information from the wheel sensors is relayed to the central control module, which keeps a constant check on the wheel speeds.
  • Hydraulic modulator: When the control module detects that a wheel is nearing lockup, it sends a signal to the hydraulic modulator, which automatically adjusts the brake pressure to that wheel. This is achieved by quickly releasing and reapplying the brake pressure, resulting in a pulsating effect that effectively prevents the wheel from locking up. As a result, the e-bike brakes in intervals until it safely comes to a stop.

Benefits of ABS

The Bosch Anti-Lock Braking System offers several key advantages for cyclists. First, it enhances on-road safety by preventing wheel lock-up during sudden stops or on wet, icy, or muddy surfaces, helping to maintain contact between the tires and the road. This continuous traction allows the tires to grip the road surface more effectively, thereby improving steering control and enabling faster braking. With Bosch eBike ABS, you’ll feel more confident as it allows you to navigate potentially tricky conditions with ease, knowing your bike is helping you maintain control. Additionally, Bosch eBike ABS reduces the likelihood of skidding, ensuring smoother and safer rides overall.

According to studies by Bosch Accident Research, up to 29% of all accidents involving e-bikes could be prevented every year if all pedelecs are equipped with ABS. Now that’s some food for thought!

The Bosch Anti-Lock Braking System isn’t just for motorcycles and cars. It’s a smart solution for cyclists seeking that extra level of safety and control. And when you’re carrying cargo or kids on your bike, safety becomes even more paramount. Tern GSD S10 and GSD R14 electric cargo bikes both come equipped with Bosch eBike ABS, giving you the confidence to ride safely with heavier loads, so you can focus on enjoying each journey and embracing new adventures with your loved ones.
