Customizing Rohloff E-14 on the GSD R14

The GSD R14 (Gen 3) pairs Bosch eShift with the Rohloff E-14 electronic shifting system. With a 526% gear range, the Rohloff E-14 provides the low gears needed for steep climbs and heavy cargo while offering closely spaced gear ratios that make it easy to maintain a comfortable pedaling cadence. The GSD R14 was Tern's first bike to feature Bosch eShift. In addition to the core benefits of Bosch eShift, the Rohloff E-14 also introduced several advanced features that further enhance the riding experience:

  • MultiShift
  • Auto Downshift
  • Shift While Coasting

In October 2025, Rohloff released the E-14 2.0 firmware update, significantly expanding the capabilities of Bosch eShift on the Rohloff E-14. The update introduced cadence-based Auto Shift with three selectable riding modes:

  • Manual (M): Shift gears yourself using the electronic shifter.
  • Manual+ (M+): Shift manually while pedaling, but allow Bosch eShift to automatically shift when coasting to help maintain your selected cadence.
  • Automatic (A): Bosch eShift automatically shifts up and down to maintain your preferred cadence.

Current GSD R14s come with the latest Rohloff E-14 firmware installed. Earlier GSD R14 models can be updated to unlock the expanded Bosch eShift features. The following article walks through the firmware update process and explains how to customize Auto Shift to match your preferred cadence and riding style.

To use the latest Bosch eShift features, both the Bosch Smart System and the Rohloff E-14 must be running the latest firmware.

Once both updates are complete, the new Bosch eShift features will become available.

Step 2: Choose your preferred cadence

Automatic shifting uses your preferred pedaling cadence as the target for gear selection.

The default cadence is 75 rpm, but you can customize it to match your riding style.

Using the Kiox 300

Turn on the display.

Press and hold the Select button.

Navigate to eShift.

Select Cadence.

Use the + and – buttons to adjust the value.

Press Select to save.

Manual (M)

Shift gears yourself using the electronic shifter.

Manual+ (M+)

Shift manually while pedaling. While coasting, Bosch eShift automatically shifts to maintain your selected cadence.

Automatic (A)

Bosch eShift manages all gear changes automatically, maintaining your preferred cadence as riding conditions change.

Step 4: Customize auto downshift

Auto Downshift automatically shifts into your preferred starting gear whenever you come to a stop.

The default starting gear is 7.

To change it:

Open the Bosch eBike Flow app.

Navigate to Settings - eShift.

Select your preferred starting gear.

Save your changes.

You can also disable Auto Downshift if you prefer.

Step 5: Enable or disable MultiShift

MultiShift allows you to shift across multiple gears by pressing and holding the shift button.

Navigate to Settings.

Open MultiShift.

Enable or disable the feature.

Tip

It may take a few rides to find the cadence and Auto Downshift settings that feel best.

  • A lower cadence results in fewer shifts and firmer pedaling.
  • A higher cadence keeps your legs spinning faster with lighter pedal pressure.
  • Riders carrying heavy cargo or riding in hilly areas often benefit from selecting a lower Auto Downshift starting gear.
